Apple Strawberry Crumble

"We must have a pie. Stress cannot exist in the presence of a pie."

~David Mamet

I am a big fan of this recipe, and it's not just because it is so easy to make and tastes amazing, especially when it's warm, but it takes no time at all to put together! It's a great mid-week dessert. Heck, it's a great any-time dessert! A piece of advice however; the strawberries and the apples will produce a lot of juice, so if you want to avoid having a lot of juice at the bottom, you can do one of two things. You can macerate the strawberries in a bowl (just add some of the sugar you are going to use in the recipe to sprinkle of them in a bowl and let them sit for about 10 minutes), or you can add a thickener to the apples and strawberries, like cornstarch. All right, enough talking for now, happy baking!

Ingredients:

For the filling:

1 cup - Strawberries (sliced)

2-3 Apples (chopped)

1 tsp - Cinnamon

1/2 tsp - Nutmeg

1 tbsp - Vanilla extract

2 tbsp - Maple Syrup

For the Crumble:

1 cup - All-purpose flour

1 cup - Rolled Oats

1 tbsp - Cinnamon

1/3 cup - Brown Sugar

1/3 cup - Butter (softened)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Chop and slice your apples and strawberries and place them in a bowl. Add the extract, the maple syrup, the cinnamon and the nutmeg, and combine with a wooden spoon.

  3. Place the fruit mixture into a baking dish and flatten until leveled.

  4. For the crumble, in a bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix together until fully incorporated.

  5. Add the butter, and begin to squeeze the mixture through your fingers until your mixture forms small clumps or "crumble".

  6. Sprinkle the crumble on top of the apple strawberry mixture.

  7. Place into an oven and bake for 30-35 minutes.

  8. Allow the crumble to cool for at least 15 minutes before digging in!
